I have just stepped right outside my comfort zone and have just embarked on exciting adventure, an adventure that immediately revealed to me the two most important commandments. Love God first and love your neighbor as yourself.

After such a wonderful Sabbath yesterday in Guatemala City I was sad to leave all the people I had just met, but excited for what was to come. The brethren in Guatemala City were so warm and welcoming, greeting everyone with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I don't think that I have ever been kissed by so many people in my whole life!

This morning we headed to the orphanage in a former US school bus. The entire three hour drive to the orphanage Guatemalan children on the side of the road waved at all the passing vehicles, including ours. It has been awesome to see how warm and welcoming everyone we have come into contact with has been.

Oftentimes in my life I pretend as if I were in a movie. I observe the setting, envision the audience, what mood should be portrayed, what music to have in the background.. Today this happened as we were driving to the orphanage. There were twelve of us in a yellow school bus rolling through Guatemala, scenes of outdoor markets and farm landscapes rolled by, the sight and sound of locales greeting us came in, and as the bus driver blared typical Latin dance music it felt as if we were in a intro scene to a south American adventure movie. This surreal moment was just the thing I needed to get pumped up about the next few weeks of service.I had met the supervisors of the orphanage before during a visit last feast to the orphanage, but I had forgot how welcoming and just cool they were.

We loaded the bus bright and early morning and took off on our three hour drive to our next adventure in Solola, Guatemala at the Eagle’s Nest Orphanage. The ride was bumpy and windy going through towns, shops, and homes and passing by many Guatemalans who were sitting by the side of the road just waving at buses that drove by. The group sang some recognizable songs that came from our bus driver, Francis’s CD. With only a couple of stops on the way we reached the town we will be staying in the next two weeks. Four of the Guatemalan brethren met up with us: Werner, Helen, Evelyn and Andrea.

We had an authentic lunch of black beans, guacamole, steak and handmade tortillas and talked to some of

Today we embarked on the final leg of our travels to reach our ultimate destination -- Eagle’s Nest Orphanage -- where we will be serving for the remainder of our time here in Guatemala. We left bustling Guatemala City in the morning, climbed aboard a big yellow school bus that brought us back to our elementary childhood, and journeyed about three hours through the windy, mountainous, and absolutely stunning countryside to Solola where the orphanage is located. The ride was an adventure. Upbeat Guatemalan music mixed with some oldies hits played in the background on the bus while the fresh air blew in through the open windows and everyone snapped pictures of the beauty we were passing.

Bags are packed and piled into the back of a big yellow school bus and the 13 of us climb in and get comfortable for the 3 hour ride from the Robledo's home to Eagles Nest Orphanage. As we make the trek to Solola, the bus is full of chatter as we are finalizing activity planning, sharing stories, singing, laughing, taking photos of the countryside, and Tim is teaching us Australian words.

So, after two days in Guatemala City and a three hour school bus ride, we made it to Eagle's Nest Orphanage. The drive here was beautiful and there were people alongside the road the whole way. As we got closer to Solola (the city of the orphanage), the average age of the people along the road became less and less. We passed many groups of children who would wave at us as we drove by. I waved back but noticed that the children didn't seem to be waving to say "hi." I later found out that when it's close to Christmas time, the homeless children/families will wave at people that pass by in hopes of receiving some sort of gift. When we pulled into the parking lot of the orphanage we were greeted by the directors as well as a few of the orphans.

God blessed us all with a safe arrival in Guatemala. Our trip lengths varied from 7 to 36 hours.

We were greeted at the airport by the pastor of the Guatemalan churches -- Israel Robledo and his wife, Thelma. Among the welcome committee was Nasser and Lucky Robledo and their two children Andrea and Monica, along with Werner and Francisco Solorzano.
