After such a wonderful Sabbath yesterday in Guatemala City I was sad to leave all the people I had just met, but excited for what was to come. The brethren in Guatemala City were so warm and welcoming, greeting everyone with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I don't think that I have ever been kissed by so many people in my whole life!
This morning we headed to the orphanage in a former US school bus. The entire three hour drive to the orphanage Guatemalan children on the side of the road waved at all the passing vehicles, including ours. It has been awesome to see how warm and welcoming everyone we have come into contact with has been.
Upon arriving to the orphanage, placing our luggage in our rooms, and eating a delicious lunch, we were given the grand tour. It was incredible to hear Feliz and Pedro, the directors of the orphanage, talk about their goals for the children and their vision for the future. They are not only concerned with the children in the orphanage, but they also are working to positively impact children and adults in the local community. There are about 50 employees here including construction workers, security guards, cooks, teachers and mamas (who live with and care for the orphans). Eagle's Nest operates a school for over 150 kids, a manna feeding center that serves about 60 kids as well as the orphanage that currently housed more than 40 children. We were able to see the majority of the orphanage and it was great to see how happy the kids are, and how much they enjoy the extra attention from visitors. Feliz and Pedro have many stories to share about the blessings God has given them, and the opportunities they have been given to serve. Tomorrow we will begin our activities, including English and music lessons as well as outdoor activities the children. It is getting late here, until next time!
