As a teacher it is always exciting to have moments when your students are engaged and excited about what they are learning. Vice versa it’s those moments when you just don’t have the children’s attention when you are most frustrated. Today I experienced both.

Today was an incredibly tiring but fulfilling day. After a delicious breakfast, we began the morning activities. The morning schedule was similar to church camp, with the children rotating through English class, music class and outdoor activities. At times it was slightly chaotic, but it was wonderful to see how excited the kids were to have some extra attention and to learn new things.

Day 2 Not What We Planned

The most interesting thing that happened today was definitely working with the 2-5 year old orphans. We had gathered all of the children in a classroom, and in there was Jonathan, Helen, and I. The kids were pretty rambunctious, but I was confident I could calm them down and get some good learning done. I told them to sit down in a circle, and they did initially ,but then all together all the kids started army crawling, squirming, worm-ing around the floor giggling with glee. Me and Jonathan shared a look and we knew then that this class would be much harder than expected.

Today was our first full day of activities with the kids and it exceeded all expectations! It was filled with fun, energy, laughs, love, learning, and hard work. To sum up the day, here is my top five moments along with a picture.

1. Picking up the kids this morning to start the activities. They were all so excited to see us and wanted to hug us, be picked up, and talk to us. The room was buzzing with energy and love! All the kids were so welcoming and happy and it made for a heartwarming start to the day.

When I was planning for this trip to Eagle's Nest my expectation was that it would be similar to being on activity staff at camp, but today broke my expectations apart. Working with these kids is like being a mom, a sister, a friend, a counselor, and activity staff all at the same time, with the added challenge of not understanding more than a few words of the language. It is incredibly hard work, but it is worth it when you see these kids flash you a smile, hear the room filled with laughter, and have kids come up to give you a hug or hold your hand.

We had a pretty successful first day. I spent most of the day with the babies (ages two and under). Victoria, the first little girl I held has an incredibly sad background that made me tear up when I heard it. She does not have ears, is completely blind, and has other physical and mental disabilities that have not yet been diagnosed all due to a failed abortion. I got the privilege to hold, feed, play with her and help her walk with her walker.

We had a great and tiring first day. We met with all of the kids in the morning to talk to them about today’s theme: God Loves Me. We met them in the main portion of the orphanage and were greeted with hugs, hand holding and lots of playing by the kids. We looked through albums of photos with some of them. They were so excited to show us photos of themselves. When we got the group to quiet down, one of our Guatemalan attendees, Werner talked with the kids. As a group we wanted them to know that John 3:16, “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” applies to everyone. God loves the WHOLE world and God loves them.

Today was the day that we began our project work here at Eagles nest. We organized to greet the orphans at their home. Upon entering the orphanage home I was bombarded with noise of speaking, yelling and cheering. The orphans had just been bathed by the mothers and were full of energy.

We were told prior to the introduction that most of the orphans crave affection.

It had never occurred to me that the amount of affection that a child needs and wants is tremendous. I honestly wasn't prepared for the amount of affection that I would be shown.

Today we departed our wonderful brethren in Guatemala and traveled to Solola. Our trip took us through some amazing landscapes, rolling hills and winding roads. Arriving at the orphanage, we were greeted by the family who run Eagle's Nest. Pedro, and his wife Feliz. It was clear early on that God has really blessed the work here at Eagle's Nest.

Eagle's Nest has grown dramatically since 2009 with the development of its school program taking children through grade 1-6 and now ranking second in Solola, with much media attention boosting local esteem. The children here show a tremendous amount of love and affection, and this is clearly seen in there bright, joyful behavior and openness towards others.
