Today was another typical day at the orphanage, classes with the kids in the morning, and working on the school desks in the afternoon. For lunch today we were able to do something a bit different. There is a former orphanage cook that operates a small restaurant out of her home for visiting groups, and we had the opportunity to eat there instead of at the dining hall. Her home was small, but clean and beautiful. We were able to start by helping form some delicious corn tortillas, and then were given a short tour of her land. Lunch was delicious and included soup, fried chicken and rice. It was great to see the history of one of the houses on the property (her husband of 15 years was born in it, and her mother-in-law is still living there).

Today we had lunch at a lady’s house who lives in town. She used to work at the orphanage but due to an illness she had to stop working here. Her husband still works at the orphanage. Pedro and Felise, who run the orphanage, still keep in close contact with her. She opens up her home to people to experience a traditional Guatemalan meal.

Our day today was a little different.

We had the opportunity to visit a Guatemalan lady in her home today. She graciously cooked the most amazing fried chicken and rice. Her home that she lived in was very simple and would put our consumerism to shame.
We are working very hard here in Guatemala to benefit the lives if the orphans. We are also blessed to witness an overview of how people live their daily lives, especially one which we aren't used to.

Sometimes he hides himself, but today he was visible. I had gone out to the small patio behind the hall and there he was. I saw his back under the sunlight; vegetation now covers him. For many of us, he’s nothing more than a mound -- a small mountain -- at the skirts of the volcano and if no one points out that his shape resembles an elephant (frankly, vaguely so), it would perhaps go unnoticed.
