January 2, 2014 "traveling in a tuk tuk" blog by Kyle, Lisa, and Amy

As we mentioned in the video, we took Tuk Tuk’s from Eagle’s Nest Orphanage to a Guatemalan home for lunch.

 

As we arrived at the Guatemalan home, we were greeted by the family and jumped right in to making corn tortillas. Some of us were more successful than others.

A new day, a new year, a new adventure. Today was our third full day teaching the kids at the orphanage. We are now in the groove of things and our classes are all going a lot smoother and the kids are a lot more comfortable with us. Because the kids were all up late last night watching fireworks, we had a different schedule than normal. We normally spend all morning teaching the kids and work on refurbishing desks in the afternoon, but today the flip flopped the order of activities.

So unfortunately I slept through the fireworks last night... much to the surprise of everyone. Because they were quite loud apparently and impressive. But the rest of the day went very well. Again the older kids were getting better and better and more involved into the music. The impressive student of the day for me was Jennifer. She is a girl who is hard of hearing and uses two hearing aids and was initially hesitant to start singing, but today she really started participating well. Wanting to use the drums, singing very well, and I saw her singing the songs outside of the class.

After a long and tiring day it feels wonderful to sit in front of the warm fireplace at the dining hall to write this blog post. The past 24 have been very interesting, Guatemala doesn't have any regulations on fireworks (that I know of) and they were set off every 6 hours starting at midnight, and ending at 6pm. The orphanage is located high on a hill surrounded by villages and there was a constant stream of fireworks going off from all the surrounding areas every six hours. It will be nice to get a chance to sleep well after all the noise from last night!
