It’s really exciting to see how the children are opening up to us. Today I think I’ve used the most Spanish I have used this whole trip. Even though I am working with the English classes, many of the children don’t know enough English to understand a conversation. I was able to use some Spanish while explaining an art project to a few kids sitting at a table. It may have been simple Spanish, but I used it and they understood it.

Today I parted company with the rest of the team and with the children to whom I offer a sincere apology for keeping them in the background in these posts. So I’d like to dedicate this one post to them. I hope it isn’t just an idle justification to say that when I write something more often than not it comes out subjectively and is diary-like. So if even here I slip into that old habit, I hope you’ll excuse me.

Here are some impressions and comments about some of the children I met last week. The disclaimer is that these impressions are my own and as such have all the distortions and the projections, transferences and all that stuff that Freud talked about.

This past week here at Eagle's Nest orphanage has been amazing for so many reasons. Tonight, when we dropped the kids back off at their home, I pondered one lesson that I’ve observed all week. Within these walls I’ve observed kids watching out for one another on a daily basis. Of course I’ve also seen kids engaging in the usual sibling rivalry, however what stood out to me this evening is how these children often show warmth and affection one to another on a very regular basis!

They really have each other’s backs. The older children will often pick up the younger, play with them, make them laugh, shower them with hugs and kisses and hold them when they're crying.

Today the entire orphanage participated in a pool party organized by the United Youth Corps group. It was slightly chaotic, but all of the children (and most of the adults) had a blast! The younger kids started out with some Jonah themed crafts and stickers, and then made sponge balls. The older kids began in the pool, and the younger ones joined them before long. It suddenly became a giant war with sponge balls flying in every direction, people being pushed into the water, and everything that could possibly make a lifeguard cringe. Whoever showed up at the pool in normal clothes left soaking wet. The majority of the 2-5 year olds were fully clothed, but that did little to deter them. They plopped down in basins, and poured buckets of water on each other's heads.

I can't believe we've already been here at Eagle's Nest, working with the kids for one full week. The kids have really stolen our hearts and you can't help but open your arms to them when you see them. I know it is going to be so hard to leave these kids come Thursday morning, but at least we've had the chance to make a difference in their lives and I know they have impacted every single one of our lives!
