Today I parted company with the rest of the team and with the children to whom I offer a sincere apology for keeping them in the background in these posts. So I’d like to dedicate this one post to them. I hope it isn’t just an idle justification to say that when I write something more often than not it comes out subjectively and is diary-like. So if even here I slip into that old habit, I hope you’ll excuse me.

Here are some impressions and comments about some of the children I met last week. The disclaimer is that these impressions are my own and as such have all the distortions and the projections, transferences and all that stuff that Freud talked about.

The children that I’ve met are a family. It is a peculiar family and one in which the members take care of each other. All the children call Pedro “Papa Pedro” and the nannies are “mamas.”

Having someone twist the ropes of the tire swing and then letting go is something that Gabriel enjoys. When you see his face it is apparent that he gets a real kick out of it.  He tries different positions and the pleasure he gets out of it, well, you can see it in his eyes.

Erick easily bursts into tears, but one can comfort him easily.

I should have quite a bit to say about Eliseo, since it was with whom I shared the most. I let him beat me at soccer on Friday afternoon but probably he would have done it anyway even if I had made a greater effort.

María had become attached to me and she was very responsive to what I told her. Sometimes she would whine and protest a little, but she would always respond positively. When I saw her early in the morning, she would hug me and say “mi amigo, mi amigo.”

I could go on a bit more, but this is just a sketch.

I know I could have done much more and could have understood these children so much more if I have had less of my ego dogging my feet and getting in the way, but in whatever way I helped these children I should be thankful for it.
