Today was awesome for so many reasons!

This morning we were able to sleep in some since it was the kids stayed up late to watch fireworks for the New Year. Some of us also stayed up to see the amazing firework show. We watched as the hills sparkled with the fireworks. It was the best firework show I’ve ever seen.

Instead of starting the day with the kids, we started the day with our work project. We all worked hard to finish the sanding of desks. We also worked on varnishing the wood and painting the legs. It may have just been work, but it was enjoyable with fun music playing and wonderful conversation. It has been great getting to know all the people here better.

I am an Industrial Technology and design teacher from Australia, and I am here in Guatemala learning, living, loving and teaching. At the beginning of the project we began the process of refurbishing over 100 desks for the school.

As a teacher I know the importance of high quality, well prepared and maintained facilities and resources, so as the work project within my professional scope, I have gladly been running it.

When wood working, you will spend most of your time finishing a work piece, through the process of sanding and varnishing. As most of the UCG volunteers had done very little wood work, they would be put through their paces.

We started today off a little different than we have been doing since we’ve been working with the kids. We did our work project in the morning working on the desks and painting those. Then in the afternoon we met with the kids to continue with English and the other classes. I’ve been helping with the English classes and have worked with the older kids. The older kids are working on a video with the theme “Brave” and we’re trying to coordinate the music and dancing with the theme as well as having them draw pictures of what helps them be brave or when there are instances they have to be brave. The older kids are so much fun because they’re willing to dance and sing and just have fun with the video-making. I can’t wait for tomorrow when we will continue working on the video!
