January 14, 2013

It rained all night.  Nice to sleep to.  I was hoping to connect to Internet, but unsuccessful.

The first thing I did was walk into the center of Harare to get exercise.  So much of the trip is sitting and sitting some more.  The rain let up and I made a run for it.  Today, being Monday, the traffic and hustle and bustle is far greater than yesterday.  I see a lot of young people in school uniforms on the way to schools....looked like high school kids  One very sweet moment was a father holding the hand of 5-6 year old boy smartly dressed in a uniform with a knapsack on him.

I took pictures of buildings in the center and all of a sudden was surrounded by 3 plainclothes police men.  Oh oh.   Why was I taking pictures?  What was of special interest in the building across the street. They asked the question several times.  They were not happy and asked the questions sternly. They told me these are the main government buildings and are not allowed to be photographed.  I told them that I was impressed by how nice they looked.  They finally let me go.  I did not take any more pictures and finished my 3-4 mile walk.

Travel tip #51  When in a country where you see no other people who are white, think twice before taking ANY pictures at all. You are not in the United States.

I'll be flying in a few hours down to South Africa and will post what I have so far and will add to this day later.  I look forward to seeing all our friends, the Wallis's, Websters and others in Pretoria.

Later...
