Haven’t had such a good Sabbath in a long time; I think it’s always refreshing to step out of the same old rut and I feel that having the Sabbath in a different place, with different people and with a different format for services, accomplished that purpose. I understand that these small things help to enliven the spirit.

Hermann Hesse lamented that “it is hard to find this track of the divine in the midst of this life we lead.” What follows is a bit negative, but I’ll put the rest of the phrase nonetheless: “in this besotted humdrum age of spiritual blindness, with its architecture, its business, its politics, its men!” I think the Sabbath is a good time to seek it.

We went to Panajachel while the sun was about to set and had dinner there (although a cup of hot chocolate and “inherited” cake leftovers were sufficient for me); also our sisters went shopping.

On Saturday nights there are usually a lot of people on the streets. Some travel all the way from Guatemala City to Pana to drink or to hang out with friends. I encountered some former students of mine on the street (high school students at that time; now they must be in their early 20s). One of the girls in the group was a little bit tipsy. We chatted for a while and then said goodbye.

Now I want to tell this because it was, as it were, a “piece of the world” that had come between what I was experiencing with our brethren from the Church and it acted as a wedge, I suppose. Now, I’ve seen some very bad things in this world and what I saw wasn’t that bad, but it just got me thinking that sometimes there can be a hardening of one’s heart and a blindness that there is another way of living, a “higher way” (if one wants to call it that), where one can be truly happy and content and that there are some people in this world who live that way. They really exist. They really do. And I guess that that’s when one can find that “track of the divine” that Hesse spoke about.
