The road that snakes its way down led us to Sololá -- ”City of the Overview,” as it is called, and that rightly so, because from different points of view one can behold the lake and its tranquility with the impressive volcanoes that rise farther, across it, sleeping.

We had left Guatemala City maybe around quarter to ten. We were riding on an old school bus that is no longer used for that purpose. Orphanage “Nido del Águila.” That was where we were heading to. “Living means to accumulate future memories,” says one character of Ernesto Sábato (the Argentinean writer). I read that in my youth and I’ve always remembered it since. Well, I was carrying my share of memories of the place where we were going with me; the weather, the experiences. Obviously, I would have new experiences there and another layer would be added to the sediment.

When we arrived, Pedro welcomed us. He helps run this place. When talking to him I learned that he is Mexican and he was raised in the United States. He married an American whose father bought this place (which used to be a restaurant and a recreational site) to turn it into what now is.

He gave us a tour of the place, stopping here and there to speak with details about what this project was, what it is and he expects to accomplish with it. I felt admiration for him, his wife and the good that has been done here.

El camino que serpentea hacia abajo nos llevó a Sololá, “Ciudad del paisaje”, como es llamada y eso con razón, pues desde varios puntos se observa al calmo lago y los imponentes volcanes, ya dormidos.

Habíamos salido de la Ciudad capital quizás a eso de las diez menos cuarto; íbamos en bus que había sido un bus escolar en otro tiempo.  Orfanato Nido del Águila.  Hacia allá nos dirigíamos.  “Vivir consiste en acumular futuros recuerdos”, dice un personaje de Sábato y yo ya tenía cierta acumulación sobre el lugar a donde íbamos, el clima, las experiencias allí vividas; claro que esta vez serían diferentes y echarían una capa más de sedimento sobre las primeras.

Al llegar nos recibió Pedro, quien es uno de los encargados de este lugar; al conversar con él me enteré que es mexicano, criado en los Estados Unidos.  Se casó con una americana cuyo  padre compró este lugar (que solía ser un restaurante y centro recreativo) para convertirlo en lo que ahora es.

Nos dio un tour de las instalaciones, deteniéndose aquí y allá para hablar prolijamente sobre lo que era, lo que es el proyecto y lo que esperan lograr con él.  Sentí admiración por él, por su esposa y por el bien que se ha hecho aquí.
