A Day in the Life of a Volunteer
Each and every day, we wake up to the view of multiple volcanos and the lake. This outlook is where we having our morning meetings. We go over the plan for the day and end with our names accompanied by silly dance moves.
After breakfast, we go to a spiritual lesson lasting about 15 minutes. This is when we pick up the kids to bring them to their art, English, music, or dance classes. One activity they have really enjoyed is the “paracaídas juegas” or parachute games.
Each class is split into two blocks. Each age group (3-5, 6-9, and 10-18) have different activities. The 6-9 year olds had a good time watching Jelly videos while the 10-18 year olds enjoyed learning choreography to the song “Gold” by Britt Nicole.
Every day after lunch and a team meeting, we all head to the work project. This year, we are assisting in building transitional apartments for the older kids. It includes lots of digging and moving of materials. Sometimes the kids jump in to help the team.
While the work is hard, it is also very rewarding for us to know we are building something that will benefit these kids in the future.
After work we are all very tired and excited for dinner, but first we must make more time to love on the kids. While our days are tiring, these kids make it all better.
Finally, we end the night with a group talk and a Ted Talk speech from a lady on the team, followed by a jam session, sometimes with some of the older kids.
